Lying Sack of Dog Mess, Glenn Beck, Doesn't Think that a Murdering Neo-Nazi Racist is a Right-Wing Extremist

Friday, June 12, 2009

By David Neiwert
Crooks and Liars

Glenn Beck and his fellow wingnuts -- the ones who have been whipping up hysteria among their right-wing populist followers since Obama's election and before -- essentially announced they have no intention of reflecting on their roles in today's horrifying shooting at the Holocaust Museum in D.C.

They did this by doing what they always do whenever these situations arise: First call it all an "isolated incident" committed by a "lone nutcase" who just happens to be acting out beliefs emanating from their own quadrant. Then, when that fails, blame it on the Left.

Beck offered the following rationale on his Fox News show tonight:
Beck: What they're missing is: The pot in America is boiling. And this is just yet another warning to all Americans of things to come.
Actually, Beck has this exactly right. But frankly, it's boiling because of people like Glenn Beck, ranting hysterically every night about impending apocalypses of various forms -- looming "liberal fascism," the "economic meltdown," the "New World Order," violence spilling over the Mexican border, even FEMA concentration camps.

As I tried to explain in the case of the shooting of Dr. George Tiller, when you spread far-right conspiracy theories through mainstream channels the way Beck does with such abandon, it not only validates their beliefs, it rather hyper-validates them: It tells these people -- who see the Becks and O'Reillys as part of the "liberal media" -- that things are even worse than they thought, and it often spurs them into action....(Click for remainder.)

The Lying Sack of Dog Mess, Glenn Beck, Laughably Thinks Liberals are Destroying America

By David Neiwert
Crooks and Liars

One of the identifying signs of eliminationist rhetoric, some of you may recall, is that it compares its target bloc of people to a disease (and the deadlier the better).

Last night, Glenn Beck did just that for his national audience on Fox News:
Beck: All right, now, if all of this sounds like a government out of control, go back to the progressive movement. It is not what our founders of this country intended. One hundred years of this movement, and the government growing while our rights are shrinking. I've been saying now for awhile, and it really has clicked in my mind, um, that it is the progressive movement, it is the cancer that is inside both parties. It's why you don't feel like there is a choice. It's why John McCain and Barack Obama, you're going, 'You gotta be kidding me, right?'
Yeah, whoda thunk? John McCain was secretly a progressive this whole time!

Later on, at the end of the show, Beck essentially admits he's been fearmongering the whole hour (which is nothing new for this show), but pretends his solution (following kooky constitutional theories to their always bitter end) is actually about being brave in the face of the fear he's whipping up out of whole cloth.

Boy, that is one special talk-show host....(Click for original.)

Contessa Brewer Cuts the Mic of Right-Wing Ass-Monkey John Ziegler

By David Neiwert
Crooks and Liars

Two words come to mind every time John Ziegler appears on TV: Braying. Jackass.

Contessa Brewer had him on MSNBC this morning to talk about David Letterman's rude and sexist remarks about Sarah Palin. But it quickly became obvious that Ziegler wasn't going on MSNBC to talk about the subject -- he was there so he could bash MSNBC for six minutes or so.

And he was his usual a-hole self. It's really a sight to behold; the man's capacity for self-humiliation seems bottomless.

My favorite part comes when he whines that MSNBC is trying to depict the Republican Party as the party of aging white males.

Gee, I wonder where they could have gotten that idea:
A 52% majority of those surveyed [all adults] couldn’t come up with a name when asked to specify “the main person” who speaks for Republicans today. Of those who could, the top response was radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh (13%), followed in order by former vice president Dick Cheney, Arizona Sen. John McCain and former House speaker Newt Gingrich. Former president George W. Bush ranked fifth, at 3%.

So the dominant faces of the Republican Party are all men, all white, all conservative and all old enough to join AARP, ranging in age from 58 (Limbaugh) to 72 (McCain). They include some of the country’s most strident voices on issues from Sonia Sotomayor’s nomination to the Supreme Court to President Obama’s policies at home and abroad. Two are retired from politics, and one has never been a candidate.

Former GITMO Detainee Speaks Out! YES! I WAS TORTURED!

By CSPAN Junkie
Crooks and Liars

June 08, 2009 ABC News:
For 7½ years, Lakhdar Boumediene was known simply by a number: "10005."

These were the digits assigned to him when he arrived at the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, swept up in a post-Sept. 11 dragnet and accused of plotting to blow up the U.S. and British Embassies in Sarajevo.

In an exclusive interview with ABC News, Boumediene said the interrogators at Gitmo never once asked him about this alleged plot, which he denied playing any part it.

"I'm a normal man," said Boumediene, who at the time of his arrest worked for the Red Crescent, providing help to orphans and others in need. "I'm not a terrorist."

The 43-year-old Algerian is now back with his wife and two daughters, a free man in France after a Republican judge found the evidence against Boumediene lacking. He is best known from the landmark Supreme Court case last year, Boumediene v. Bush, which said detainees have the right to challenge their detention in court.

That decision was a stunning rebuke of the Bush administration's policies on terror suspects. It set up a ruling by District Court Judge Richard Leon, a former counsel to Republicans in Congress appointed to the bench by Bush, that there was no credible evidence to keep Boumediene detained.

After what Boumediene described as a 7½ year nightmare, he is now a free man. Boumediene: "I don't think. I'm sure" about torture.

The Right-Wing Media Has Unleashed a Race War that Threatens Our Democracy and Our Personal Safety

By Mark Karlin
Buzz Flash

In more than 9 years of editing BuzzFlash, nothing has been as profoundly wounding to me since 9/11 as yesterday's act of domestic terrorism at the Holocaust Museum -- its location so tragically symbolic.

Like all BuzzFlash readers, we welcomed the election of Barack Obama as a return to America's Constitutional, pro-democracy roots -- and as a step into a future filled with promise and opportunity, not the destruction, tyranny and lies of the Bush Administration.

But what none of us expected is that the right-wing media shills and their corporate owners would unleash what is becoming an armed rebellion of white males against our governnment: the likes of FOX, Limbaugh, Savage and the whole treasonous crew has lit the match -- with a wink and a nod -- of the long, historic White Power movement, while inciting the displaced and confused anger of the more casually involved white male who sees the economy and his "entitlement of race and gender" slipping away from him.

Make no mistake about it, these are perhaps the first skirmishes in a right-wing media convergence with the White Power movement and the official military ordinance lobby for both of them -- the NRA.

Yesterday's domestic terrorism act was not just another murder in America's shooting gallery; it was the clearest sign in a series of recent shooting deaths that the right wing is going to use the White Power movement as its foot soldiers in leading this nation into bloody attacks, assassinations, and chaos -- out of which the white Christian nation will "triumph."  If all of this sounds a bit familiar, it's because the notion of racial purity and power is a horror that we have lived through before.

How quickly our euphoria has faded. We thought that we would be facing vibrant public policy debates over healthcare and civil liberties, and now we have to prepare for a war on the "lone wolves," the militia movement, and the pernicious, treason-inciting talk show hosts of the right wing....(Click for remainder.)

Oil and Indians Don't Mix

Oil and Indians Don't Mix

By Greg Palast
Friday, June 12, 2009

For Air America Radio's Ring of Fire

There's an easy way to find oil.  Go to some remote and gorgeous natural sanctuary, say Alaska or the Amazon, find some Indians, then drill down under them.

If the indigenous folk complain, well, just shoo-them away.  Shoo-ing methods include:  bulldozers, bullets, crooked politicians and fake land sales.

But be aware.  Lately the Natives are shoo-ing back.  Last week, indigenous Peruvians seized an oil pumping station, grabbed the nine policemen guarding it and, say reports, executed them.  This followed the government's murder of more than a dozen rainforest residents who had protested the seizure of their property for oil drilling.

Again and again I see it in my line of work of investigating fraud.  Here are a few pit-stops on the oily trail of tears:

In the 1980s, Charles Koch was found to have pilfered about $3 worth of crude from Stanlee Ann Mattingly's oil tank in Oklahoma.  Here's the weird part.  Koch was (and remains) the 14th richest man on the planet, worth about $14 billion. Stanlee Ann was a dirt-poor Osage Indian.

Stanlee Ann wasn't Koch's only victim.  According to secret tape recordings of a former top executive of his company, Koch Industries, the billionaire demanded that oil tanker drivers secretly siphon a few bucks worth of oil from every tank attached to a stripper well on the Osage Reservation where Koch had a contract to retrieve crude.

Koch, according to the tape, would, "giggle" with joy over the records of the theft.  Koch's own younger brother Bill ratted him out, complaining that, in effect, brothers Charles and David cheated him out of his fair share of the looting which totaled over three-quarters of a billion dollars from the Native lands.

The FBI filmed the siphoning with hidden cameras, but criminal charges were quashed after quiet objections from Republican senators.

Then there are the Chugach Natives of Alaska.  The Port of Valdez, Alaska, is arguably one of the most valuable pieces of real estate on Earth, the only earthquake-safe ice-free port in Alaska that could load oil from the giant North Slope field.  In 1969, Exxon and British Petroleum companies took the land from the Chugach paid them one dollar.  I kid you not.

Wally Hickel, the former Governor of Alaska, dismissed my suggestion that the Chugach deserved a bit more respect (and cash) for their property. "Land ownership comes in two ways, Mr. Palast." explained the governor and pipeline magnate, "Purchase or conquest.  The fact that your granddaddy chased a caribou across the land doesn't make it yours."  The Chugach had lived there for 3,000 years.

No oil company would dream of digging on the Bush family properties in Midland, Texas, without paying a royalty.  Or drilling near Malibu without the latest in environmental protections.  But when Natives are on top of Exxon's or BP's glory hole, suddenly, the great defenders of private property rights turn quite Bolshevik:  lands can be seized for The Public's Need for Oil.

Some Natives are "re-located" through legal flim-flam, some at gunpoint.  The less lucky are left to wallow, literally, in the gunk left by the drilling process.

Take a look at this photo here, taken in the Amazon rainforest in Ecuador.  It's from an investigation that I conducted for BBC TV, now in the film "Palast Investigates."  I'm holding up a stinking, black glop of crude oil residue pulled from an abandoned Chevron-Texaco waste pit.  A pipe runs from the toxic pit right into the water supply of Cofan Indians.

Chief Emergildo Criollo told me how oil company executives helicoptered into his remote village and, speaking in Spanish - which the Cofan didn't understand - "purchased" drilling rights with trinkets and cheese.  The Natives had never seen cheese.  ("The cheese smelled funny, so we threw it in the jungle.")

After drilling began, Criollo's son went swimming in his usual watering hole, came up vomiting blood, and died.

I asked Chevron about the wave of poisonings and deaths.  According to an independent report, 1,401 deaths, mostly of children, mostly from cancers, can be traced to Chevron's toxic dumping.

Chevron's lawyer told me, "And it's the only case of cancer in the world?  How many cases of children with cancer do you have in the States?  ... They have to prove that it is our crude," which, he noted with glee, "is absolutely impossible."

Big Oil treats indigenous blood like a cheap gasoline additive.   That's why the Peruvians are up in arms. The Cofan of Ecuador, unlike their brothers in Peru, have taken no hostages. Rather, they have heavily armed themselves with lawyers.

But Chevron and its Big Oil brethren remain dismissive of the law.  This week, Shell Oil, to get rid of a nasty PR problem by paying $15 million to the Ogoni people and the family of Ken Saro-Wiwa for the oil giant's alleged role in the killing of Wiwa and his associates, activists who had defended these Nigeria Delta people against drilling contamination.  Shell pocketed $31 billion last year in profits and hopes the payoff will clear the way for a drilling partnership with Nigeria's government.

Congratulations, Shell.  $15 million:  For a license to kill and drill, that's a quite a bargain.

GOP's Civil Liberties Hypocrisy

Editor's Note: Amid a surge of right-wing terrorism and intimidation -- including the murder of a Kansas abortion doctor and a fatal assault on Washington's Holocaust Museum -- we are re-posting an article from April that examined the Republican fury over a Homeland Security report that warned of exactly such possibilities:

Just as Republicans have refashioned themselves as fiscal conservatives in the age of Obama, apparently forgetting that they allowed a budget surplus to be transformed into a record deficit while George W. Bush was President, they now seem to be taking up the cause of civil liberties – at least as far as right-wing groups are concerned.

By Nat Parry
Consortium News

What has piqued their interest is a recent Department of Homeland Security assessment, sent to all local, state and tribal law enforcement agencies, detailing the potential terrorist threat posed by right-wing extremists.

Significantly, the assessment concludes that “lone wolves and small terrorist cells embracing violent right-wing extremist ideology are the most dangerous domestic terrorism threat in the United States.”

By citing right-wing extremists as the most significant domestic security threat, the report marks a radical departure from the Bush administration, which placed greater emphasis on the supposed threat posed by “homegrown” Islamic extremists, and often targeted liberal and left-wing activists for surveillance and harassment, under the vague umbrella of “counter-terrorism.”

Although the new DHS assessment does not contain any specific information on impending terrorist attacks, or single out any specific organizations, it generally warns that many current political and economic conditions parallel those of the 1990s, which saw a rise in right-wing extremism culminating in the Oklahoma City bombing that killed 168 people on April 19, 1995.

But because the report argues that some on the Right may be motivated to join extremist organizations, conservatives are complaining that the DHS has unfairly singled out citizens concerned about gun rights, taxes and immigration control....(Click for remainder.)

Holocaust Museum Terrorist & Tiller's Murderer Have in Common an Apocalyptic Conspiracy 'Deeply Embedded in the American Psyche'

By Meg White
Buzz Flash

Like many of you, I have been soaking up all the information I can about the two recent domestic terrorist attacks: the murder of George Tiller, in which Scott Roeder has been charged, and the attack on the Holocaust Museum, in which James von Brunn was charged today.

Part of my search to understand what is happening has taken me to some real wacky Web sites. Though von Brunn's has been taken down, the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups, has a screen shot of it here. Trying to make sense of the acts of these crazy men is a frightening exercise.

Except they're not actually crazy, which is even scarier.

To be fair, I don't have any psychological reports of the mental health of either man. But after talking to Chip Berlet, a senior analyst at Public Research Associates (a progressive think tank), I'm convinced that the labels of "crazy white supremacist" and "psycho anti-abortionist" are far too simplistic.

Berlet told me he'd seen no evidence that these two men, or even Timothy McVeigh for that matter, are crazy. Instead, they're "acting out on beliefs."

And people who share these beliefs, if not the violent impulses, are doing everything they can to disassociate themselves. Right-wing Christian sites are bending over backward to extrapolate leftist tendencies from von Brunn's anti-Christian ravings.

Berlet managed to conjure a laugh when I asked him about the right-wing blogs that were raising von Brunn's anti-Christian writings as proof of religious peoples' lack of culpability in the recent violence. He said that they're just "trying to point the finger at someone else" when some of them deserve to be called out for polarizing hate speech.

"This is just deception," Berlet said. "The right wing is trying to build a bulwark against the obvious charge that they've engaged in demonizing marginalized groups."...(Click for remainder.)

Keeping Your Cool When Confronted by Christian Crazy

By VJack
Atheist Revolution

Friendly Atheist recently had a post in which Hemant shared a report he had received from an atheist woman about how a complete stranger had approached her in Wal-Mart and began praying over her 15-week-old child. He asked readers how they would respond if something like this happened to them as well as a few related questions. I found myself thinking that how I would like to respond is probably quite a bit different from how I would actually respond.

I thought that the first comment on Friendly Atheist's thread, contributed by SkepGeek, was so perfect that it should be shared:
I would treat this the same way as when the mentally handicapped guy waves vigorously at me and says hi when I get on the bus.
What a great lesson for us all to remember! Sure, we could get angry and yell. It might even make us feel better temporarily. But when one is not dealing with a rational adult, SkepGeek's reframe seems so much better.

I spent a year living in an apartment next to a family with an moderately retarded adult child. He was extremely friendly but could sometimes be a bit intimidating due to his size, the loud volume with which he spoke, and his quick and unpredictable movements. One never quite new what to expect from him, and I recall that my female guests, which he would never miss greeting, often said that he made them feel uncomfortable.

The thing is, I never would have yelled at him, struck him, or even found myself becoming more than mildly annoyed with him. Yes, he was loud and often disruptive. His parents seemed to cope by leaving him out in the apartment complex's parking lot, often with no supervision. Having him in my face every time I went in or out did get old. At the same time, I recognized that he did not know any better. He wasn't doing this to annoy me; it was just who he was....(Click for remainder.)

"Free Republic" Poster a Fan of Von Brunn (Surprised?)

Following up my earlier post, it seems the right-wing terrorist is a poster has fans at the right-wing Free Republic web site. Is this not roughly the third terrorist to be a member. So this guy has fans who are out there somewhere.  (H/T Think Progress).

I copied one of his the entire re-posting of his original post because they appear to be disappearing (wonder why that is). As you will see, he is convinced that Obama is not a US citizen (sounds terribly familiar to me). You will also note (if they are not soon deleted) that the comments section is full of support from Von Brunn's views (I am shocked!). The post after the flip.

WHY DON'T WE SEE ONE WORD OF THIS IN ANY OF THE MEDIA?

Love him or hate him, we all remember how the press went to great lengths to find out every move that President Bush made ... finally unable to come up with anything factual, so they created it! When their accusations were proven empty, they refused to retract one word of the fraud they perpetrated on the American people.

Dan Rather lost his job over fraudulent documents, because common people like you & me reached out and ripped CBS to pieces. They couldn't stand the loss of sponsors OR viewers!

The same Media went to great lengths to scandalize & destroy Sarah Palin. She maintains a 91% approval rating among voters from all parties, thanks to the Internet and investigative journalists who don't work for the mainstream media.

NOW ------- The Supreme Court has scheduled a Conference for Dec 5th about Obama's

U. S. Citizenship. STILL, not a word about any of this from the Media. If it were not for the Internet and talk radio, American citizens would become the servants of a dishonest & conspiratorial Media.

THINK ABOUT IT. IT DIDN'T USED TO BE THIS WAY! How much longer are we going to sit on our hands & say not a word?

AND DON'T THINK THE MEDIA SIMPLY DOESN'T KNOW - THEY ARE GETTING POUNDED WITH EMAILS ABOUT IT!!!

Obama could not get a simple security clearance with the information the government has on him ---- NOBODY COULD!

NOW he is privy to every top secret America has!

What is going on??? WHERE ARE THE GOOD PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY - ARE YOU OUT THERE???

Man Who Killed Guard at Holocaust Museum Has Links to Ultra-Right British National Party

By Matthew Taylor and Daniel Nasaw
The Guardian

A white supremacist who killed a security guard at a Holocaust memorial museum in the US has links to the British National party, which gained two MEPs in last week's European elections.

Thousands of visitors fled the museum in Washington on Wednesday after James von Brunn opened fire, killing a security guard. In the gunfight that followed, the 88-year-old was shot, and is now in a critical condition in hospital.

Yesterday it emerged that Von Brunn, a longtime antisemite, had attended meetings of the American Friends of the British National party (AFBNP), which was set up to raise funds from far-right activists in America.

Mark Cotterill, who ran the US-based organisation before it folded in 2001, said: "He did attend meetings. I have just checked my database and he is down as 'meetings only', so he was not a major donor, although he may have put some money on the plate when it was passed round."

The AFBNP treasurer, Todd Blodgett, also told the Washington Post that he and Von Brunn had attended fundraising meetings in Arlington County. The BNP leader, Nick Griffin, spoke to at least two AFBNP meetings and said the money raised by the organisation made a "significant contribution to the BNP's [2001] general election campaign".

Yesterday a spokesman for the party said: "You get a lot of people coming to meetings but I don't think you can blame us for that. Even if he did go to meetings, it was nothing to do with us."...(Click for remainder.)

The Truth About Obama and the Deficit

By Jonathan Chait
The Plank @ The New Republic

A few weeks ago, I wrote a column pointing out how strange it is that President Obama is being blamed for huge budget deficits, when the projected deficits we face are entirely due to policies he inherited. In my column, I cited this paper by the Center on Budget and Policy priorities, which found that Obama's budget would reduce the budget by $900 billion over ten years compared with keeping current policies in place.

Yesterday David Leonhardt of the New York Times took up a similar question. Leonhardt looked at the budget from 2009 through 2012, and tried to figure out what had changed in those years since 2001. He found that the business cycle accounted for 37% of the higher red ink. More than half came from legislation signed by President Bush. Seven percent came from Obama's stimulus bill, and only three percent from his regular budget.

It was an admirable and serious article. A good sense of how serious can be seen in the contrast to a Politico story that ran the same day. Politico concerned itself entirely with the perception that Obama is responsible for the new debt without bothering to explore the merits of the perception. It ran quotes alleging as much (GOP Sen. John Cornyn: "This was not an inherited situation. This was a matter entirely of this administration’s and this Democratic leadership’s making") without pointing out that the allegation is demonstrably false....(Click for remainder.)

Anti-American U.S. Chamber of Commerce Pushes to End 'Buy American' Rules

By Stephen C. Webster
The Raw Story

The United States Chamber of Commerce asked the U.S. Office of Management and Budget on Thursday to allow greater freedom in the spending of stimulus dollars.

Specifically, the Chamber, traditionally an advocate of big business and Republican economic policies, cautioned that requiring taxpayer dollars to be spent on American goods threatens the loss of billions of dollars.

“U.S. businesses and local governments are quickly waking up to the reality that Buy American restrictions are likely to cause them substantial harm, particularly if countries such as Canada retaliate with protectionism of their own, said Myron Brilliant, the chamber’s senior vice-president of international,” in a report by Canada’s Globe and Mail.

“We could be at risk for billions of dollars and we’re very concerned about those numbers,” Brilliant was quoted saying.

He added: “We’re sending warning signals now that if we don’t fix it the numbers could get very big. We would face potential retaliation from our friends in Canada, potentially from Europeans, and we want to avoid that.”

Already ‘watered-down’

The “Buy American” rules which landed in the stimulus were ultimately a “watered-down” version of the original proposal. In the Senate, the inclusion would have required all manufactured goods bought with stimulus funds to come from the U.S. However, after being cautioned by European Union and Canadian leaders, the Obama administration backed off Buy American....(Click for remainder.)

Glenn Beck's Solution to Holocaust Museum Terrorist: We All Need to "Shoot Straight" With Each Other

By John Aravosis
AMERICAblog

Seriously. He really is a big scared angry child with a camera. Of course, he was even better last night than that little quote. Glenn Beck's guest last night, with Beck seemingly in agreement, argued that the Holocaust denying, racist, Jew hating, government hating, Obama hating, Free Republic frequenting guy who shot up the Holocaust Museum was actually a liberal. Proof? Hitler was a liberal. (He had the word "socialist" in his party name. Seriously.) And he hated Jews.

Yes, which party does this describe more closely:
National Socialism was similar in many respects to Italian fascism (see Fascism). The roots of National Socialism, however, were peculiarly German, grounded, for example, in the Prussian tradition of military authoritarianism and expansion; in the German romantic tradition of hostility to rationalism, liberalism, and democracy; in various racist doctrines according to which the Nordic peoples, as so-called pure Aryans, were not only physically superior to other races, but were the carriers of a superior morality and culture; and in certain philosophical traditions that idealized the state or exalted the superior individual and exempted such a person from conventional restraints.

The Big Hate

By Paul Krugman
The New York Times

Back in April, there was a huge fuss over an internal report by the Department of Homeland Security warning that current conditions resemble those in the early 1990s — a time marked by an upsurge of right-wing extremism that culminated in the Oklahoma City bombing.

Conservatives were outraged. The chairman of the Republican National Committee denounced the report as an attempt to “segment out conservatives in this country who have a different philosophy or view from this administration” and label them as terrorists.

But with the murder of Dr. George Tiller by an anti-abortion fanatic, closely followed by a shooting by a white supremacist at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the analysis looks prescient.

There is, however, one important thing that the D.H.S. report didn’t say: Today, as in the early years of the Clinton administration but to an even greater extent, right-wing extremism is being systematically fed by the conservative media and political establishment.

Now, for the most part, the likes of Fox News and the R.N.C. haven’t directly incited violence, despite Bill O’Reilly’s declarations that “some” called Dr. Tiller “Tiller the Baby Killer,” that he had “blood on his hands,” and that he was a “guy operating a death mill.” But they have gone out of their way to provide a platform for conspiracy theories and apocalyptic rhetoric, just as they did the last time a Democrat held the White House....(Click for remainder.)

China Wants Top US Technology In Climate Bargain

By Arthur Max
Associated Press via The Huffington Post

BONN, Germany — China wants the United States to deliver top of the line technology as part of a new global warming agreement, the chief U.S. climate negotiator said Thursday.

Jonathan Pershing, who was part of a U.S. delegation that returned this week from Beijing, said the Chinese are looking to the U.S. for ideas and technology to retool its high-carbon industry.

"They want from us technology, and we want from them action," Pershing said on the sidelines of U.N. climate talks. "There's room for agreement there."

But the Chinese "don't want any technology. They want some of the advanced technologies which are part of our own intellectual capital," Pershing told Public Radio International's Living on Earth program.

The mission to Beijing by Pershing and Todd Stern, President Barack Obama's climate envoy, underscored the paramount role of quiet diplomacy in reaching critical political deals _ outside the conference halls of the 192-nation U.N. negotiations, where delegations tend to repeat entrenched positions.

An understanding between the U.S. and China, the world's two largest polluters, is essential for the talks to succeed in crafting a successor to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. That agreement, which expires in 2012, calls on 37 industrial countries to cut emissions by a total of 5 percent from 1990 levels but made no demands on developing countries.

The U.S. has made it clear that China must be part of a new climate package, and that without China there's no deal.

But Stern was quoted as saying in Beijing on Thursday the U.S. was not demanding that China accept mandatory emissions targets. "We don't expect China to take a national cap at this stage," Stern was quoted as telling the China Daily....(Click for remainder.)

Expert Advise on Dealing With a Prior Administration's Use of Torture

By John W. Dean
FindLaw

No official announcement has been made that the Obama Administration is not going to prosecute anyone – other than a few low-level soldiers who photographed themselves and already have been prosecuted – for torturing detainees in our so-called war on terror. But it has become clear that President Obama's announced desire to look forward, not backward, embodies such a decision.

Still, we must all hope that the Obama Administration makes more than a non-decision type of decision, and does not merely resolve the matter by silence and inaction. There are, in fact, precedents, and studies, that illuminate the grave problems confronting a democracy in making a choice when faced with the options of prosecuting and punishing versus forgiving and forgetting. I discovered this material some years ago when studying authoritarian governance.

The Insights of Samuel P. Huntington

I provided evidence in my recent book Conservatives Without Conscience that the Bush/Cheney presidency was the most authoritarian in American history. When doing research for that book, I read a work by the late Samuel P. Huntington, the highly- regarded Harvard political scientist and former president of the American Political Science Association. More specifically, I was interested in Professor Huntington's survey of the transition to democracy, during the mid-1970s through the 1980s, of some thirty countries that had previously been under authoritarian rule, which Huntington wrote about in The Third Wave: Democratization In the Late Twentieth Century.

Professor Huntington, who once served as a foreign policy adviser to Democratic presidential candidate Hubert Humphrey, was respected across the political spectrum, as conservative columnist Jonah Goldberg noted on his passing. Huntington called it as he saw it, and few have studied more governments so closely throughout the world.

When writing The Third Wave, Huntington explained that rather than following his normal practice of detached political analysis, he would explain the implications of his findings at five points in the book, where he "abandoned the roles of social scientist, [and] assumed that of [a] political consultant." It was in this context that Huntington addressed how a democratic government should deal with torture that had occurred under the rule of an authoritarian predecessor....(Click for remainder.)

Right-Wing Comes Swinging For Fox News Anchor Shepard Smith

By Joe
Joe.My.God

Today's top story on World Net Daily, the most widely-read conservative site in nation, is not an alarmed recapping of yesterday's Holocaust Memorial shooting, but rather a blistering attack on Fox News anchor Shepard Smith for his righteous worry about the alarming state of an increasingly extremist-laden America in which even the nationality of our president is questioned.
Fox News anchor Shepard Smith, host of the top-rated evening cable newscast, believes Americans challenging the eligibility of Barack Obama to hold the office of president are "crazies," saying "there is no truth whatsoever" to the suggestion Obama is not a "natural born citizen." Smith made the remark during analysis of today's shooting at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, where an elderly gunman opened fire with a rifle, killing a security guard before himself being shot. Police were probing an alleged white supremacist, James von Brunn, as the assailant. During his interview with Heidi Beirich of the Southern Poverty Law Center, Smith said: "There are these crazies out there who want to pretend [Obama's] not a citizen of the United States, who want to pretend that his religion is something they see as in some way troublesome to them and all of us. And there is a group perpetuating this thought, and there is a culture to which you can attach yourself very easily through the Internet. ... We know it's absolutely – there is no truth whatsoever – zero – to any of those ideas, yet they live within the computer and they fester in people's minds."
WND then goes on to dig up ten year-old dirt on Smith, going into great detail about a completely unrelated parking incident in which he struck a woman with his car. Because that is more important than decrying a racist murder in the nation's capital. Most of the emails that Smith reads on-air in the clip below probably came from Free Republic, where members are staging a letter writing campaign calling for his dismissal for his "anti-patriot rantings."...(Click for original.)

Is the Right Still "Proud to be a Right-Wing Extremist"?

By Kyle
Right Wing Watch

Back in April and May I wrote a whole series of posts about how the Right was systematically trumping-up a controversy over the Department of Homeland Security Report, "Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment” [PDF,]" which eventually led the DHS to pull the report.

Now, in light of the murder of Dr. George Tiller and the recent shooting at the Holocaust Museum, we're seeing a variety of pieces claiming that these events validate the report's warnings.  And undoubtedly they do, but the irony here is that this report was never about run-of-the-mill conservatives or right-wing political groups - it was focused on violent, racist, anti-Semitic, and anti-government extremists - but it was the conservatives and right-wing political groups who made it about them.

In the very first post I wrote about this issue, I noted that when I first read this report, I ignored it because it was of no use to me and what I do at this blog:
While I am always on the look-out for things demonstrating the extremism of the Religious Right, this report focused solely on violent racist and anti-government groups and since we tend not to cover such groups here, the report had little to offer.

Or so I thought. As it turns out, the report was apparently exactly about the Religious Right groups we follow here … or at least that is what Religious Right groups are insisting, based entirely on a single footnote that says:

Rightwing extremism in the United States can be broadly divided into those groups, movements, and adherents that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particular religious, racial or ethnic groups), and those that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely. It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration.

The Right immediately seized on this one footnote in the ten page report, calling it an attack on Christ and turning it into a fund-raising opportunity.  But, as I repeatedly tried to point out, the report wasn't about them and I couldn't understand why they kept insisting that it was, leading to this post asking "Why Is The Right Willingly Conflating Itself With Violent Extremists?" and doing so by intentionally misrepresenting what it said while running ads demanding DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano’s resignation....(Click for remainder.)

KRXQ Hosts Apologize for Disgusting Hate Speech

By Michelle Garcia
Advocate.com

Hosts Rob Williams and Arnie States of the Rob, Arnie, & Dawn in the Morning show on KRXQ radio in Sacramento issued an apology on their Thursday show, after using language that promoted violence against transgender children.

States and Williams, joined by cohost Dawn Rossi, welcomed transgender advocate and blogger Autumn Sandeen and TransYouth Family Allies executive director Kim Pearson.

"It's not up to me to grant forgiveness or absolution, and people are going to hold their feet to the fire," Pearson told the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation after the program. "I think this was a good thing, it was a good forum, it was productive, it was good for everyone listening -- but time will tell. It was a good first step, but actions speak louder than words."

On May 28 the hosts were discussing the parents of a boy in Omaha who wants to transition from male to female. Williams called the boy "a weird person who is demanding attention." He suggested that his mother tell the boy that wearing a dress is "not what we're doing in this culture." He also called transgender people "freaks," asserting that therapy could steer them away from being transgender, since "they were [probably] molested" as children.

States also said that if his son put on a pair of high heels, he would probably hit him with one of his shoes.

"You got a boy saying, 'I wanna wear dresses,'" States said, "I'm going to look at him and go, 'You know what? You're a little idiot! You little dumb-ass! Look, you are a boy! Boys don't wear dresses.'"

Meanwhile, Dawn Rossi defended the kids during the segment, and she constantly apologized on air for her cohosts' remarks.

In a message posted on the show's website Sunday night, Williams wrote that they let their listeners down by presenting their "opinions on a very sensitive subject in a hateful, childish, and crude fashion."...(Click for remainder.)

U.S. State Department Condems Anti-Gay Violence in Iraq

By Waymon Hudson
The Bilerico Project

Yesterday, the United States officially condemned the increasing violence towards the gay community in Iraq, which has spiked since the beginning of the Iraq War. The US Embassy in Baghdad has also raised the issue with Iraqi government officials.

The State Department spokesman Ian Kelly had this to say when questioned on the issue by reporters:
In general, we absolutely condemn acts of violence and human rights violations committed against individuals in Iraq because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

This is an issue that we've been following very closely since we have been made aware of these allegations, and we are aware of the allegations. Our training for Iraqi security forces includes instruction on the proper observance of human rights.

Human rights training is also a very important part of our and other international donors' civilian capacity-building efforts in Iraq. And the US embassy in Baghdad has raised, and will continue to raise, the issue with senior officials from the government of Iraq, and has urged them to respond appropriately to all credible reports of violence against gay and lesbian Iraqis.

This comes after the growing chorus of international human rights groups, including Amnesty International, have begun speaking out about the atrocities in Iraq towards LGBT people.

iraqilgbt.jpgWhile statistics have been hard to gather on the number of LGBT Iraqis killed because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, it has recently been reported that at least 25 boys and men have been killed in Baghdad alone because they were either gay or believed to be. Horrific pictures of people killed by roving death squads have begun to leak out of the country at an alarming rate.

Many, including Amnesty International, have sent letters Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki urging government protection for the LGBT Community and expressing their concern that religious leaders may be inciting extreme violence towards LGBT Iraqis, as was the case in the the 2005 fatwa from one of Iraq's leading Shiite Muslim clerics, Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, which declared that gays and lesbians should be "killed in the worst, most severe way" and more recently when Shiite cleric Moqtada Al Sadr who ordered the "depravity of homosexuality be eradicated."...(Click for remainder.)
