Stephen Moore Claims He's Never Seen Any Guns or Swastikas at the Tea Bag Protests

Friday, September 25, 2009

By Heather
Crooks and Liars

From Washington Journal Sunday Sept. 20, 2009.
Kevin Baker, Harper’s Magazine & Stephen Moore, Wall Street Journal, discussed the Obama Presidency so far, and news of the week.
After hearing from a caller that accuses Harper's Kevin Baker of being insulting to the protesters by calling them "tea baggers" and astroturf and calling him "wimpy" to boot, Baker explains that he isn't the one that came up with that term. Baker says he'd be happy to go head to head with those protesting and attend some of the protests himself- as long as none of them bring their automatic weapons.

Moore then goes on to defend the protesters by blaming President Obama for polarizing the country. Baker says nothing justifies showing up with automatic weapons and with signs saying that the Tree of Liberty needs to be watered with blood and notes how polarizing that is.

Then Moore adds this.
Moore: I was out there. I didn't see anybody with... (crosstalk) I didn't see any... with all due respect; in all the events I've been to I've never seen anybody with a swastika. I've never seen anybody with a gun and these people are not anti-American.

Moderator: We've got to wrap it up there...

Baker: I've seen them repeatedly.

Rachel Maddow: Blue Dog Mike Ross Pocketed Over $1 Million from Pharmacy Chain USA Drug

By Heather
Crooks and Liars

I wonder what the voters in Ross' district are going to think as this news comes out. From The Politico's Propublica: Mike Ross raises eyebrows with healthy haul:
Arkansas Rep. Mike Ross — a Blue Dog Democrat playing a key role in the health care debate — sold a piece of commercial property in 2007 for substantially more than a county assessment and an independent appraisal say it was worth.

The buyer: an Arkansas-based pharmacy chain with a keen interest in how the debate plays out.

Ross sold Holly’s Health Mart in Prescott, Ark., to USA Drug for $420,000 — an eye-popping price for real estate in a tiny train and lumber town about 100 miles southwest of Little Rock.

“You can buy half the town for $420,000,” said Adam Guthrie, chairman of the county Board of Equalization and the only licensed real estate appraiser in Prescott.

But the $420,000 that USA Drug paid for the pharmacy’s building and land was just the beginning of what Ross and his wife, Holly, made from the sale of Holly’s Health Mart. USA Drug owner Stephen L. LaFrance Sr. also paid the Rosses $500,000 to $1 million for the pharmacy’s assets and paid Holly Ross an additional $100,000 to $250,000 for signing a noncompete agreement. Those numbers, which Mike Ross listed on the financial disclosure reports he files as a member of Congress, bring the total value of the transaction to between $1 million and $1.67 million...

Karl Rove Adamantly Denies Health Care Debate is Connected to Race, but the Numbers Suggest Otherwise

By David Neiwert
Crooks and Liars

I always find myself uttering low mordant chuckles whenever Karl Rove comes on the teevee (always Fox) to complain about how mean and nasty those Democrats are.

And as you would expect, he is appalled that not just Jimmy Carter but Bill Clinton as well happen to believe that there is a powerful racial element coursing through the more venomous opposition to President Obama's efforts to obtain health-care reform. Or so he told Sean Hannity last night:
Rove: Look his [Clinton's] comment was like Jimmy Carter -- irrational and unbelievably partisan. This is the kind of stuff that he said routinely during the 1990s about his political opponents, denigrating them personally, questioning their motivations.
Yes, that was coming from the mouth of Karl Rove. And not even a whisper of irony.
Rove: Why can't he just accept the fact that people disagree with President Obama's health care plan as they disagreed with his health care plan, because they represent a spirit of liberalism and a government control and government domination of a very personal decision that ought to be left between a doctor and his patient as to the decision for our health.
Problem is, there is in fact data out there that strongly suggests there's a powerful connection between opposition to health-care reform and voters with racist attitudes about Obama. In other words, that Carter and Clinton are right, and Karl Rove and the entire Fox network are wrong....(Remainder.)

Maddow: ConservaDems Against Stopping Banks from Gouging Customers

By Raw Story

In another sign that conservative Blue Dog Democrats in Congress may prove to be a larger obstacle to the president's agenda than the Republican minority, Blue Dogs are opposing the president's plan to create a Consumer Financial Protection Agency to oversee the financial markets.

Instead, as Politico reported, they are rallying around an alternative plan put forward by Rep. Walter Minnick, a freshman Democrat from Idaho. Minnick's alternative plan would eliminate the protection agency and leave in place the existing patchwork of various regulatory bodies, who would come together in an advisory council "that will have the power of suggestion, not actually any power of enforcement," as MSNBC's Rachel Maddow put it.

That attempt to water down financial reform drew a sharp rebuke from Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA), who heads the House Financial Services Committee on which Minnick sits. Frank told the Huffington Post he was "absolutely opposed" to Minnick's proposal.

"As soon as I saw the story, I called Minnick and said, 'You've really gotta retract it,'" Frank told HuffPo.

"We did not know this was coming," the lead sponsor of the CFPA in the committee, Rep. Brad Miller (D-NC), told HuffPo. "An advisory committee is a long way from a watchdog agency with the power to set rules and enforce them."...(Remainder.)

Rachel Maddow & Sam Stein Take on the Shoe Lady's Comments

By Diana Sweet and David Edwards
The Raw Story

On MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Show Tuesday night, Maddow talked with Huffington Post political reporter Sam Stein about comments made by Condoleeza Rice on national security during a recent interview with Fortune Magazine.

Rice made some strong declarations about the situation in Afghanistan during that interview:
"The last time we left Afghanistan, and we abandoned Pakistan," she said, "that territory became the very territory on which Al Qaeda trained and attacked us on September 11th. So our national security interests are very much tied up in not letting Afghanistan fail again and become a safe haven for terrorists.
"It's that simple," she declared, "if you want another terrorist attack in the U.S., abandon Afghanistan."

Maddow and Stein find it interesting that with former Vice President Dick Cheney side-lined for back surgery, the timing of Rice's comments, as until now she has remained relatively silent on such matters.

In her opening, Maddow illustrates that it's perhaps a little odd that Rice is soliciting advice on how to avoid a terrorist attack....(Remainder.)

Hatch Proposes Health Reform Exemption for States Beginning with 'U'

By Stephen C. Webster
The Raw Story

Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) must have an obscure sense of humor, because this joke did not get many laughs.

Joining a Republican effort to amend the health reform legislation being put together by Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT), Sen. Hatch proposed an amendment (PDF link) that would exempt states from a key aspect of the proposed reforms, so long as the state's name begins with the letter "U" (there's only one: Utah).

Discussing the unusual move, The Nation's Chris Hayes joined MSNBC host Keith Olbermann on Monday night. Hayes suggested that Republicans are "banking" on the 564 different amendments being forgotten about come election time.

"If Senator Hatch believes it's so unfair that the states with the highest insurance costs are the only ones that will be provided with this transition relief, why did he just ask for an exemption for more than any state with a name that begins with the letter 'U'?" asked Olbermann. "Why didn't he propose to do away with [the provision] altogether?"

"This is classic," said Hayes. "Everything you need to know of the Republican party's philosophy of governance and so-called commitment to small government is embodied in that amendment. It reminds me of back when the omnibus budget bill was passed and the top people who were bringing home the pork were all these Republicans, who were railing against pork."...(Remainder.)

The Retarded Baby Jesus Demands Obama Turn on Water in Central Cali...Um, Pumps Have Been on for Months

By Media Matters

Broadcasting live from California's Central Valley, Sean Hannity continued his oft-repeated attack on "radical" environmentalists and the Obama administration for supporting water pumping restrictions that protect threatened delta smelt, by claiming the restrictions are "drying up this once fertile area" and calling on President Obama to "turn this water on now." But according to the Department of the Interior, the pumping restrictions ended on June 30 and have been returning to capacity since; moreover, water resource issues in the valley persist for many reasons, including years of drought in California, despite conservatives' attempts to blame problems solely on the restrictions.

Steve King (R-Batshitfuckistan): Gay Marriage = “Socialism”

The push for marriage equality is part of a radical socialist agenda, according to U.S. congressman Steven King, a Republican from Iowa.

By Julie Bolcer
Advocate.com

In an extreme formulation of a tired antigay argument, U.S. representative Steve King (pictured) of Iowa said that same-sex marriage is a "purely socialist concept" during an interview with a conservative radio network on Wednesday.

King, a Republican who represents the 5th congressional district, spoke with Greg Corumbus of Radio America for World Net Daily about his concern that congressional Democrats and the Obama administration are "pushing closer and closer" to repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act.

Unsatisfied with comparing the prospect of same-sex marriage to the legalization of incest, as opponents such as former senator Rick Santorum have done, King said he wanted to "take this along the rationale even further."

"If relationships between individuals cannot be prohibited by the state legislature, then there's no ban that can actually be constitutional that would ban group marriage, and it wouldn't have to be for reasons of, let me say, love or lust, it could be reasons of profitability or avoiding taxes or accessing benefits," King said....(Remainder.)

Evangelist and Really Bad Actor, Kirk Cameron Plans to Distribute Darwin's "Origin of the Species" with Creationist Introduction

By Nicole Belle
Crooks and Liars

Do you remember Kirk Cameron, former child star and current promoter of the banana-as-proof-of-God theory of evangelism?

Well, he's baaaack:
In a video posted recently to YouTube, Cameron lays out a plan to subvert 'Darwin Day' on November 22, 2009 -- a date marking the 150th anniversary of the publishing of Charles Darwin's "Origin of Species." Cameron says that he and like-minded activists plan to deliver 50,000 copies of an altered version of Darwin's book to students at dozens of U.S. universities.

Cameron explains that this "very special" edition of the "Origin of Species" will include an introduction explaining "Adolf Hitler's undeniable connection" to the theory of evolution, and highlighting "Darwin's racism" and "his disdain for women." Cameron's edition also exposes the "many hoaxes" of evolutionary theory, while presenting a "balanced view of Creationism." (There's a pdf of this introduction here.)
Super classy guy, that Cameron. Tying Darwin to Hitler. And misogyny and racism. What, no pedophilia or necrophilia? A YouTuber who goes by the name ZOMGitsCriss responds to Cameron's plans:
