Rep. Steve King (R-Homophobic-Douchebagistan) Says Jennings is "Poster Boy for NAMBLA"

By Media Matters

Last night on Fox News, Rep. Steve King (R-IA) continued his homophobic attacks on Kevin Jennings, the head of the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools.  During an interview with Sean Hannity, who has also been going after Jennings hard, King attempted to link the safe schools adviser to NAMBLA -- or the North American Man-Boy Love Association.  "I think Kevin Jennings has got to be the poster boy for NAMBLA," King declared.

Fucktard O'Reilly Debates Prof. Richard Dawkins, Calls His View of How to Teach Science "Fascism"

By Huffington Post

One might have expected fireworks when Fox News host Bill O'Reilly interviewed avowed atheist Richard Dawkins on his show the other night, but the two men managed to have a remarkably even-tempered debate despite the contentious nature of the subject under discussion.

"I believe in creative design, I believe in evolution, but I think it was overseen by a higher power," O'Reilly said at the opening, noting that scientists "still haven't figured out how it all began."

"It's a most of extraordinary piece of warped logic to say because science can't answer a particular question you're going throw in your lot with Jesus," Dawkins responded.

The argument went on from there, with O'Reilly at one point suggesting that Dawkins' argument for how science should be taught in school was equivalent to fascism.

Rep. John Kleine & Other Republicans Say Under Hate Crime Bill, Religious Leaders Could be Prosecuted for Preaching About Sex

By Robert Farley
PolitiFact

A number of Republican congressmen cried foul this week when Democrats attached a controversial hate crime bill to a must-pass $680 billion national defense policy bill.

The House passed the defense bill 281-146, with most of the opposition votes coming from Republicans. They said they objected to inclusion of a hate crime provision that they say will put federal prosecutors in the "thought crime" business. The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act would prohibit "violent acts motivated by actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability of a victim."

Already, some 45 states have hate crime statutes, so in practice the federal law would mostly serve to provide technical and financial support to local law enforcers so they can more aggressively prosecute violent hate crimes; but it also would allow federal prosecutors to pursue violent hate crime cases that state or local officials are unable or unwilling to prosecute.

U.S. Rep. John Kline, a former Marine whose son serves in the military, voted for the defense bill in June before it included the expanded hate crimes provision. But in voting against the bill this week, Kline echoed a concern voiced by several Republican leaders that the hate crime bill could lead to prosecution of religious leaders preaching their morality about sexual preference from the pulpit.

"I disdain racism, sexism, and bigotry, but under this legislation, any pastor, preacher, priest, rabbi or imam who gives a sermon out of their moral traditions about sexual practices could be found guilty of a federal crime," the Minnesota Republican stated in an Oct. 8, 2009, press release.

This isn't a new charge about the hate crimes bill....(Remainder.)

Yes We Can (Pass Climate Change Legislation)

By Senators John Kerry (D-MA) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC)
The New York Times

CONVENTIONAL wisdom suggests that the prospect of Congress passing a comprehensive climate change bill soon is rapidly approaching zero. The divisions in our country on how to deal with climate change are deep. Many Democrats insist on tough new standards for curtailing the carbon emissions that cause global warming. Many Republicans remain concerned about the cost to Americans relative to the environmental benefit and are adamant about breaking our addiction to foreign sources of oil.

However, we refuse to accept the argument that the United States cannot lead the world in addressing global climate change. We are also convinced that we have found both a framework for climate legislation to pass Congress and the blueprint for a clean-energy future that will revitalize our economy, protect current jobs and create new ones, safeguard our national security and reduce pollution.

Our partnership represents a fresh attempt to find consensus that adheres to our core principles and leads to both a climate change solution and energy independence. It begins now, not months from now — with a road to 60 votes in the Senate.

It’s true that we come from different parts of the country and represent different constituencies and that we supported different presidential candidates in 2008. We even have different accents. But we speak with one voice in saying that the best way to make America stronger is to work together to address an urgent crisis facing the world.

This process requires honest give-and-take and genuine bipartisanship. In that spirit, we have come together to put forward proposals that address legitimate concerns among Democrats and Republicans and the other constituencies with stakes in this legislation. We’re looking for a new beginning, informed by the work of our colleagues and legislation that is already before Congress....(Remainder.)

A Price Too High, A Hand Too Bloody

By Abby Zimet
Common Dreams

Six-and-a-half years and too many deaths after Tony Blair sent British troops into Iraq, a commemorative service for those killed turned into a searing critique of the war after the Archbishop of Canterbury blasted policymakers who went to war "without really measuring the price" and the father of a dead soldier refused to shake Blair's hand, calling him "a war criminal." Peter Brierley, whose son Shaun died in 2003, has since become an anti-war activist.
"I'm not shaking your hand. You've got blood on it." – Peter Brierley to Tony Blair.

President Barack Obama Speaks at the HRC Dinner (FULL VIDEO)

By Associated Press
MSNBC

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama pledged to end the ban on homosexuals serving openly in the military in a speech Saturday, but acknowledged to a cheering crowd that the policy changes he promised on the campaign trail are not coming as quickly as they expected.

"I will end 'don't ask-don't tell,'" Obama said to a standing ovation from the crowd of about 3,000 at the annual dinner of the Human Rights Campaign, a gay civil rights advocacy group. Obama reaffirmed his commitment to end the ban, but did not give a timetable or the specifics that some activists have called for.

The law was passed by Congress in 1993 and signed by President Bill Clinton, who also promised to repeal the ban on homosexuals in the military but was blunted by opposition in the military and Congress. Obama said he's working with Pentagon and congressional leaders on ending the policy.

Terrorism Watch Video Narrated by ... John Elway?

By Stephen C. Webster
The Raw Story

If you take notes, use binoculars, snap photographs, give to charity or carry blueprints for anything, you may be a terrorist and should be treated with suspicion.

That's the gist of a new Web video produced by the Colorado-based Center for Empowered Living and Learning, narrated by former Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway.

"Recognizing the 8 Signs of Terrorism, a new video released yesterday by the Center for Empowered Living & Learning (CELL) in conjunction with the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference is an eight-minute plunge (well, six-and-a-half, with about ninety seconds' worth of credits) into a world where average-looking white people want to murder you and everyone around you," noted Westword, a Denver news blog. "Even narrator John Elway isn't safe."

The clip was produced in part to promote CELL's latest exhibit entitled "Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere: Understanding the Threat of Terrorism," which is currently on display at the Mizel Museum, adjacent the Denver Art Museum.

"As I stand here inside the CELL's exhibit [...] I'm reminded of the morning of September 11, 2001," said Elway. "I remember turning on the television and saying, 'How could this possibly be happening in the United States of America?'"...(Remainder.)

Delusions of Grandeur: Militia Video Warns President Obama to Leave Country by Oct. 15

By David Neiwert
Crooks and Liars

Rob Waters at Hatewatch happened to catch the above short-lived video the other day:
It advises President Obama and other prominent people (“Our Dear Leader and co.”) to “leave now and give us our country back” and to do so by next week.

“If you stay,” the silent video message continues, “ ‘We, The People’ will systematically dismantle you, destroy you and reclaim what is rightfully ours. …

“We are angry and we are ready to take back the rights of the people. We will fight and We will win. …

“Dead line [sic] for your national response: October 15, 2009

“Thank you to all patriots who support our cause. … Be prepared for when the fateful day of the declaration of war is nationally announced.”
As the post notes in an update, the video was taken down shortly after it appeared on the SPLC site with no explanation. However, we managed to capture it before then and have reproduced it here in its original form, with a C&L tag at the end.

The "National Militia, Soldiers of Freedom" is not a known organization of any kind. Most likely it is some guy sitting in his basement.

This is about 99.99999999 percent certain to be just so much hot air from the "Patriot" movement and its attendant lunatic fringe. It reminds me of the threat to organize a "Million Man Militia" march back in July that never came close to materializing.

These kinds of delusions of grandeur are endemic to the Patriot movement, and are part and parcel of the grand paranoia about a looming New World Order planning to imprison conservatives and the radical communist regime of Barack Obama. That is, not only do they wildly imagine the nefarious conspiracy out to destroy America, but their imaginations similarly run riot when assessing their own breadth and strength -- not mention their abilities to act on their fantasies....(Remainder.)

Fox Nation Enbeds Video Calling Jennings a "Pervert"

By Media Matters

Under the headline "WH Laughs Off Questions on Czars," The Fox Nation embedded a video titled "Gibbs Is Asked About the Pervert School Czar." In the video, WorldNetDaily.com White House correspondent Les Kinsolving asks Press Secretary Robert Gibbs for his response to a Washington Times editorial's headline, "Obama's lewd schools czar," then asks him whether President Obama is "unconcerned about Kevin Jennings' salute of Harry Hays [sic], who publicly praised NAMBLA?" As Media Matters for America has documented, Fox News and its websites have repeatedly smeared Jennings, a Department of Education official.

Glenn Beck Teams Up With Alex Jones to Fight World Peace

By John V. Santore
Media Matters

In his response to the announcement that President Obama had been awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, Glenn Beck sounded at times like conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, all while continuing to willfully ignore the currents of racially motivated violence flowing within the 9-12 "movement" he is working to build.
BECK: These progressives are extraordinarily powerful. And this campaign of Barack Obama, this global campaign for Barack Obama, is done by global interests that have extraordinary power. They're very well connected.
Point taken, Glenn. Everyone knows that the Nobel Committee has been in the pocket of the Tri-Lateral Commission and the Council on Foreign Relations for years. It's all part of the New World Order.

But here was where Beck really showed his disregard for reality:
BECK: The Nobel Peace Prize should be turned down by Barack Obama and given -- you ready for this? Oh, this one's gonna make headlines -- should be given to the Tea Party goers and the 9-12 Project.

Fox Nation Falsely Attributes Entire FY09 Deficit to Obama

By Media Matters

The Fox Nation falsely attributed the entire fiscal year 2009 deficit to President Obama, using the headline "Obama Triples Budget Deficit to $1.4 Trillion" to link to an Associated Press article reporting on the Congressional Budget Office's (CBO) most recent budget review estimate. In fact, only a small portion of the fiscal year 2009 deficit is due to Obama's policies; in January, before he took office or signed any legislation, CBO projected that, based on policies set under President Bush and economic conditions at the time, the deficit for fiscal year 2009 would reach $1.2 trillion.

Fox Nation headline falsely claims "Obama Triple[d] Budget Deficit to $1.4 Trillion"

Fox Nation: "Obama Triples Budget Deficit to $1.4 Trillion." The Fox Nation linked to an AP article posted on FoxNews.com that reported that "[t]he federal budget deficit tripled to a record $1.4 trillion for the 2009 fiscal year that ended last week." The article further reported: "The unprecedented flood of red ink flows from several factors, including a big drop in tax revenues due to the recession, $245 billion in emergency spending on the Wall Street bailout and the takeover of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Then there is almost $200 billion in costs from President Obama's economic stimulus bill, as well as increases in programs such as unemployment benefits and food stamps."

Right Again Makes an Anti-American Ass of Itself Following Obama's Nobel Win

By Karl Frisch
Media Matters

On Friday, the nation awoke to the news that the Nobel Peace Prize had been awarded to President Barack Obama. "I am both surprised and deeply humbled," Obama said that morning. "I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments, but rather as an affirmation of American leadership...I will accept this award as a call to action."

But sadly, Obama's words failed to touch the hearts of some of the world's most esteemed and principled critics and commentators, all of whom have proven their love for America and her values time and again. I'm kidding of course.

After resolutely working to undermine Chicago's bid for the 2016 Olympic Games and then roundly applauding the International Olympic Committee's decision to eliminate the U.S. city from competition, the right-wing media responded with furor to the Nobel Committee's decision. "I did not realize the Nobel Peace Prize had an affirmative action quota," wrote Erick Erickson at the conservative RedState, who just last week had laughed at the idea that Obama had improved America's standing in the world.

"He's sided with Marxists Castro, Chavez, Morales and Ortega. ... Obama's bankrupted the US economy and destroyed the morale of our military," chimed in Gateway Pundit, another right-wing blogger. "No wonder he was awarded the Nobel." A poll question on Lou Dobbs' website expressed shock at the fact that the award had gone to "Our Supreme Leader." Fox & Friends co-host Brian Kilmeade (the brown-haired-guy-who-isn't-Steve-Doocy) suggested that Obama had delayed making a decision to send more troops to Afghanistan in order to win the award, even though the White House said it was unaware that Obama had even been nominated. "The World Apology Tour yields dividends," succinctly wrote prominent right-wing blogger and Fox News contributor Michelle Malkin....(Remainder.)

New Rule: Everyone Deserves Equal Rights

By Bill Maher
The Huffington Post

New Rule: Everyone deserves equal rights. That's why they're called "equal" and "rights." Tomorrow night President Obama will speak before a gay rights group, and on Sunday there will be a massive gay rally in Washington, or as I call it, the Million Mo March. Which makes this weekend the perfect time for Obama to announce he's repealing "don't ask, don't tell" and committing to a full-throated endorsement of gay marriage. One, because it's the right thing to do and two, because it will throw the conservative base into such a frenzied, pants-shitting panic that they'll drop all that BS about death panels and socialism and let us all get some actual work done.

But of course that's not going to happen. I can tell you what the president is going to tell his audience tomorrow: How much he supports them. How much he agrees with them. And how he wishes he was President so he could help them out. But here's the thing about being president. There isn't a lot you can do without either Congress, Oprah or Goldman Sachs behind you. But there is one thing the president can do with the stroke of a pen: He can let gays serve openly in the military. It's called an executive order. Harry Truman wrote one in 1948 for blacks in the military, and that was that.

"Don't ask, don't tell" has always been bad policy that was made out of a bullshit political compromise. You know, like you're doing now with health care. It never made sense to begin with: "Here in the Army we're all about honor. And trusting the man next to you. Now lie to my face about your sexuality, Johnson, or I'll report you behind your back." But forget all the good arguments for repeal, like because it was promised to us in the campaign or because it gets lonely on a submarine. Do it because it'll make Rush Limbaugh explode like a bag full of meat dropped from a helicopter. Do it because it'll make Sarah Palin go rogue in her pants....(Remainder.)

Sanford Almost Successful Using ‘Jedi Mind Trick’ on Trooper

By David Edwards and Stephen Webster
The Raw Story

These are not the droids you are looking for. A ticket, you will not give. Or, something like that.

In a recent highway encounter with one of South Carolina's finest, a state agent who was driving Governor Mark Sanford skidded away without penalty after being pulled over for cruising some 20 miles per hour over the speed limit.

After media picked up on the trooper's dashboard camera video, state officials said that Sanford's driver will be retroactively ticketed. The preferential treatment shown by the officer, who merely had to shake the governor's hand before letting the pair go, is nonetheless brazen.

In the video, police Lance Cpl. R. S. Salter pulls over Sanford's vehicle on Interstate 385. The vehicle's driver gets out and approaches the officer, who asks, "You got a good reason for running 85?"

The man then claims he is driving the governor, to which the officer replies, "Not really a good reason to be speeding."

"Tell him that," the driver says....(Remainder.)

The Chamber of Commerce Issues Erratic Ad in the Wake of Their Break-Up With Apple

By Media Matters Action Network

Just days after their break-up with Apple, the Chamber of Commerce has released a new ad that falsely implies the health care reform bill emerging from the Senate Finance Committee will be paid for by increasing taxes on American citizens.  In reality, the Congressional Budget Office has made it clear the bill will reduce the deficit and only tax those with the ability to pay for the most expensive health insurance....(Remainder.)
