Anti-Obama paranoia is good for at least one business.

In recent months, there has been a lot of talk about what historian Richard Hofstadter called the "the paranoid style in American politics." To believe the Glenn Becks of the world, the Democrats and their Commie, tree-hugging comrades are going to take away Americans' guns, confiscate private property, enslave free thinkers, and generally destroy the nation. Of course, most sophisticates don't give much currency to such arguments. But that hasn't stopped them from trying to monetize the phenomenon. Fox News Channel has boosted audiences by narrowcasting to birthers and tea partiers, and it has seen an increase in ads from gold companies (the metal is thought to be a good hedge against Obama destroying the dollar). HarperCollins, another New York-based component of the Murdoch empire, has ordered up a huge printing of Sarah Palin's memoir Going Rogue. On Tuesday, Peter Lattman, the Wall Street Journal's sharp private equity reporter, unearthed (subscription required) a more interesting example: the pending initial public offering of gun manufacturer Freedom Group.

Ironically, Freedom Group is a creation of Cerberus Capital Management, the private equity firm founded and controlled by Stephen Feinberg, a hard-core Republican. It's been a rough few years for the firm, which bought controlling stakes in Chrysler and GMAC (General Motors' former lending arm) at the top of the market. In the wake of the financial meltdown, Cerberus' stake in Chrysler was wiped out as part of the car company's recapitalization, and its holding in GMAC was trimmed after GMAC was forced to turn to the government for funds. Cerberus didn't get any special dispensation from the Bush or Obama administrations. But now it seems that Obama's election has provided Feinberg with an opportunity to recoup some of his recent losses....(Remainder.)

Congressional Democrats Launch Attack on Insurers’ Anti-Trust Exemption

By Daniel Tencer
The Raw Story

Democrats in Congress have launched a two-pronged attack on health insurance companies' 64-year-old exemption from anti-trust laws, with senior Democratic senators announcing their opposition to the exemption even as the House Judiciary Committee voted to end it as part of the health care reform effort.

In what the Associated Press described as "an increasingly bare-knuckled struggle over landmark health care legislation," a group of Senate Democrats announced Wednesday their intention to strip health insurers of their exemption -- in a 1945 law -- to laws that prevent corporations from creating monopolies or near-monopolies.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, Democrat of Vermont, said ending the anti-trust exemption would bring a halt to "price-fixing, bid-rigging and market allocation" in the health insurance industry, the Associated Press reported. The group led by Leahy intends to make the measure ending the exemption a part of the health care reform package being debated in the Senate.

"There is no reason why insurance companies should have exemption from antitrust laws," Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) said Wednesday. "It's time to level the playing field for American health-care consumers and make the insurance industry play by the same rules that other industries live by."

The 1945 McCarran-Ferguson Act exempts certain types of businesses, including health care, railroads and Major League Baseball, from anti-trust laws passed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries that were designed to prevent the creation of monopolies. On Wednesday, the House Judiciary Committee voted to remove health care from that list of exempted businesses....(Remainder.)

Pat Buchanan Hearts the Oath Keepers, Does Not Heart Black People

By Rude One
The Rude One

While one should not advocate kicking an old man in the nuts, neither should one advocate not kicking an old man in the nuts. Especially when that old man is Pat Buchanan. For surely, some great, karmic justice would be fulfilled if somebody walked onto the set during one of the 28 hours a day Buchanan's on as an analyst on MSNBC and used a steel-toed boot to just swiftly kick his pendulous balls into his gelatinous gut, if only to hear him cry out as he curled onto the floor and vomited.

Why does a sad, racist, self-aggrandizing abettor of criminals get to spout off constantly and then get treated like some beloved elder statesman or a charming curmudgeon with candy in his pockets? The man wrote speeches for Spiro Agnew and Richard Nixon. For that reason alone, this prideful Catholic bastard will get to live an eternity in Hell inside a shit smoker. He has, throughout his career, been a Nazi apologist. And while the left delighted in his isolationist stand against the Iraq War, that also means he's anti-immigrant and myriad other things not so fucking delightful. Plus, if he hadn't been on the fucking ballot in Florida during his filthy, hateful, egotistical presidential run, we wouldn't have had George W. Bush to kick us in our collective American taint.

Now, once again, Buchanan has written a column where he says, more or less, America would be a dandy place if all these niggers and immigrants weren't fucking it up for us white people. Talking about the new strain of radical "activism" (meaning: shouting) in "white working-class voters," Buchanan boils it all down: "In their lifetimes, they have seen their Christian faith purged from schools their taxes paid for, and mocked in movies and on TV. They have seen their factories shuttered in the thousands and their jobs outsourced in the millions to Mexico and China. They have seen trillions of tax dollars go for Great Society programs, but have seen no Great Society, only rising crime, illegitimacy, drug use and dropout rates." You got to give it to the Nazi bastard - he blames everyone for keeping the man down....(Remainder.)

Fox News Tries to Say White House Criticism of Fox is a Diversion from Health Care

By Media Matters

Fox News hosts and contributors are now asserting that the White House's criticism of Fox News is a diversion or a trick to direct attention away from the administration's policies, particularly health care reform. Glenn Beck has referred to the criticism as a "gold coin" used in a magic trick, while Newt Gingrich claimed the White House is trying to keep the media "focused on trivia."...(Remainder.)

Dutch Lawmaker Brings His Anti-Muslim Spiel to U.S.

By Sonia Scherr
Hatewatch at SPLC

A Dutch lawmaker notorious for his Muslim-bashing is scheduled to speak tonight at Temple University in Philadelphia.

Geert Wilders, who has repeatedly compared the Koran to Hitler’s Mein Kampf, was for months banned from Britain because of concerns that his anti-Islamic views would trigger violence. He held a press conference there on Friday after a court overturned the no-entry ban.

Although the Temple University event marks Wilders’ first visit to Philadelphia, he spoke in several U.S. cities during a visit to America earlier this year. In an April 27 speech in Miami, he said Europe was “on the verge of collapsing” due to an influx of Muslim immigrants. “The takeover of Europe is part of the global fight of Islam for world domination,” he said, according to a transcript of the speech that’s posted on, an anti-Islam website. “Islam is not a religion. It is a political ideology. Islam’s heart lies in the Koran. The Koran is a book that calls for hatred, violence, murder, terrorism, war and submission.”

Because Islam is not a religion, according to Wilders, “the right to religious freedom should not apply to Islam.” He called for a moratorium on the building of new mosques and the closure of all Islamic schools because “they are fascist institutions.” He said anyone belonging to a “non-Western minority” should be required to enter into “a legally binding contract of assimilation.” He also asserted that Islamic culture is inferior to Judeo-Christian culture.

In February, he screened his anti-Islam documentary Fitna on Capitol Hill at the invitation of Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz. Fitna shows verses of the Koran along with graphic footage of atrocities committed by radical Muslims, including the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks....(Remainder.)

Oath Keepers Say They’re on Patrol in Iraq

By Rob Waters
Hatewatch at SPLC

Oath Keepers, the militia/“Patriot” extremist group made up of law enforcement officers, military personnel and veterans, has posted a photo on its site showing (it says) “an active duty Oath Keeper in Mosul, Iraq” wearing two Velcro-attached “tabs” or patches, one saying “Oath Keeper” and the other “Three percent.” The flag patch beneath them is also an insignia of the “Three Percenters,” an informal alliance of hard-line gun owners.

The Oath Keepers figured prominently in a recent special report by the Southern Poverty Law Center on the resurgence of the antigovernment militia movement. The report described the group as “a particularly worrisome example of the Patriot revival.” Oath Keepers is fully on board with all the standard right-wing conspiracy theories, as evidenced by its official list of 10 “Orders We Will Not Obey,” in which it vows to resist any government efforts to “disarm the American people” or turn cities into “giant concentration camps.”

In July, the SPLC also presented Congress with growing evidence that extremists are infiltrating the U.S. military and urged Congress and the military to take steps to ensure that the armed forces are not inadvertently training future domestic terrorists.

A spokesman for the Defense Department, Lt. Col. Les Melnyk, confirmed that the uniform shown in the photo is an Army combat uniform, the kind worn by soldiers in Iraq. Army regulations stipulate that any uniform item not expressly authorized for wear is prohibited. But Melnyk noted that a Velcro-attached tab can be put on quickly for a photo-op and just as quickly removed. We’re guessing that not many soldiers are really parading around Mosul or anywhere else with these things on display....(Remainder.)

House Considers Limiting Patriot Act Spy Powers

By David Dravets
Threat Level @

Powerful House members are proposing sweeping reforms to U.S. surveillance law that puts them on a collision course with legislation in the Senate that favors domestic spying.

The proposals (.pdf) come as key provisions of the Patriot Act are set to expire at year’s end. The act, hastily adopted six weeks after the 2001 terror attacks, greatly expanded the government’s ability to spy on Americans in the name of national security.

Lawmakers are taking the expiration as an opportunity to revisit a number of surveillance provisions, including elements of the Patriot Act that aren’t set to expire, including a 2008 law that granted legal immunity to phone companies that cooperated with the Bush administration’s warrantless wiretapping of Americans.

The proposals (.pdf) by House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers Jr. (D-Michigan), Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-New York) and Rep. Bobby Scott (D-Virginia) include a plan to alter the standard by which so-called National Security Letters are issued under the Patriot Act.

Under a provision that is not set to expire, NSLs allow the FBI, without a court order, to obtain telecommunication, financial and credit records relevant to a government investigation. The FBI issues about 50,000 NSLs annually, and an internal watchdog has found repeated abuses of the NSL powers.

The Conyers-Nadler-Scott package would restrict the government by only permitting NSLs in cases concerning terrorism or spy activities of an agent of a foreign power. If it became law, such a plan would vastly reduce whom the government could target....(Remainder.)

President Obama Not Losing Sleep Over Criticism of Fox

Obama's Fox News Offensive: Has it Worked?

Anita Dunn and others have called Fox News a wing of the Republican Party and boycotted the network. Critics say Fox News is changing its ways.

By Patrick Jonsson
Christian Science Monitor

Atlanta - Has the Obama administration's broadside against Fox News – claiming that it is not a news organization – chastened the network in the slightest?

The behavior of Fox News personalities would suggest not. Glenn Beck has likened the administration’s attacks to Richard Nixon’s infamous “enemies list.”

Yet critics of Fox News claim at least one victory. After teasing coverage of Oct. 17 Tea Party protests, Fox didn’t cover the events on TV, instead relegating coverage to its website. For a network that had expansive coverage of the Tea Party Express leading up to the 9/12 protests in Washington and had commentator Sean Hannity headline a Tea Party in Atlanta this summer, that "says something,” says Jess Levin, a spokeswoman for Media Matters for America, a liberal media watchdog group.

For many media experts, however, the question is: If Fox did blink, is that a good thing?

"Reacting to criticism is a very dangerous thing for any kind of publication to get involved in, especially when the criticism is ideological,” says Tom Edsall, author of “Building Red America” and political editor at The Huffington Post. “I do think that Fox has often been tilted to the right, but if they’re now inhibiting their coverage – if these Tea Parties [that they didn’t cover] were newsworthy – that’s not good.”...(Remainder.)

Playing Monopoly With America’s Health

By Joe Conason

Popular disgust over the fat premiums that financial executives bestow upon themselves is burgeoning, and rightly so. Those Wall Street piggy banks are filling up with billions upon billions of government-subsidized dollars.

But anyone infuriated by the grossly inflated compensation of the masters of finance should check out the incredible earnings of the top executives in the health insurance business. They’re among the most highly paid suits in the country—not owing to any skill in providing health care, which they don’t do, but because they have succeeded in denying care, quashing competition, driving up costs and winning federal subsidies for their companies.

Last year, WellPoint, the country’s largest health insurer, paid chief executive Angela Braly just under $10 million in salary, options and bonuses, along with the use of a private jet for herself and her family. That included a raise of about $750,000 over her 2007 salary.

UnitedHealth Group, the second largest, paid CEO Stephen J. Hemsley only $3.2 million last year, but in 2007 he took home $13.2 million. His biggest bonanza got away when he was forced by the Securities and Exchange Commission to surrender $190 million in falsely backdated stock options, but that was nothing compared with the nearly $1 billion in options that his predecessor was required to disgorge. The SEC declined to prosecute anyone for those frauds.

Meanwhile, the CEO of Aetna, Ronald Williams, earned $23 million in 2008, and the CEO of CIGNA, Edward Hanway, brought home a total of $120 million over the past five years, plus nearly $29 million in stock options....(Remainder.)

Mormons Join Catholics In Underage Molestation Scandals. Welcome Home!

By Queerty

It just wouldn't be right to let the Roman Catholic Church be the only anti-gay religious organization embroiled in an underage sex scandal involving its leaders. Enter the Mormon Church, which is now dealing with the fallout from Michael Pratt's molestation trial. Well done, brothers!

Pratt stands accused of molesting a then-16-year-old girl (she is now 17) on multiple occasions all across the great state of Utah. At the time, Pratt was a LDS seminary principal; the victim was a student.

She spent three hours testifying against Pratt yesterday, detailing how Pratt would have her hide in the back seat of his car to sneak her off school grounds for their liaisons. He even wrong her a love song on his guitar. Adorable!

It's just too bad the victim wasn't a boy — then LDS could blame its little sexual assault problem on those pedophilia-loving homos.

Now, we're not saying all Mormons act like this — far from it. But this holier-than-thou bullshit –where LDS leaders claim they lead pious lives while the gays are undeserving of equality — is all the more ridiculous when Mormons show their gross human imperfections. We're sure god still loves Pratt; he just loves the gays more....(Remainder.)

Christianists Call For California School Boycott Over Harvey Milk Day

By Joe

Christianist outfit Save California has issued a call for parents to "boycott" California's public schools over last week's approval of Harvey Milk Day by Gov. Schwarzenegger. Via the American Family Association's "news site" OneNewsNow:
Randy Thomasson, president of, tells OneNewsNow he is calling for a boycott over a law designed to force students to honor a deceased homosexual activist. "With Harvey Milk Gay Day now the law for California government schools, and a handful of sexual indoctrination laws already existing that are in effect throughout the entire school year, parents have to at least boycott Harvey Milk Day or days or week," Thomasson urges. The boycott, he says, needs to be established by parents to protect their children, but also to drive home a point that they do not want their children indoctrinated with a pro-homosexual philosophy. Thomasson feels that taking students out of the government school system is the only way to accomplish this protection. He adds that parents also need to be aware of the quality of education their children are receiving in California. Thomasson reports that "on the academic chart, California is among the lowest academically in the country. On the sexual indoctrination chart, California leads the pack with Massachusetts following."

Ryan White Act Passes House, Obama to Sign

The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act by a vote of 408-9, sending the bill to President Barack Obama’s desk.

By Kerry Eleveld

The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act by a vote of 408-9, sending the bill to President Barack Obama’s desk.
The Senate approved the legislation last week and the president is expected to sign it based on a Statement of Administration Policy that encouraged passage of the legislation.
The bill -- a product of bipartisan, bicameral compromise -- will fund critical HIV/AIDS treatment and some prevention programs through 2013 at about $2.5 billion annually, a 5% increase for all sections of the act.
The program helps about 500,000 mostly low-income and uninsured people living with AIDS/HIV annually, according to the Government Accountability Office.
Democratic House speaker Nancy Pelosi of California hailed the legislation’s passage. “Today, Ryan White–funded initiatives are a fundamental component of the systems of care upon which low-income individuals with HIV and AIDS rely,” Pelosi said in a statement. “The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act continues our commitment to hundreds of thousands of low-income people living with HIV/AIDS.  In doing so, we will save lives, save money, and help create a healthier America.”

The Ryan White CARE Act, named after a teenager who contracted AIDS through a blood transfusion, was originally passed in 1990 and has since been extended three times....(Original.)

WA Senator: Radical Homosexuals Will Take Control

By Michelle Gardia

In a recent e-mail to supporters, Washington state senator Val Stevens made her final plea to constituents to vote no on Referendum 71, stating that gays and lesbians would "take control of our culture and push their depraved lifestyle on our children and families."

Stevens said it was a miracle that Referendum 71 -- the ballot measure asking voters to approve or reject the state's expanded domestic-partnerships law -- even made it onto the ballot because of the "harassment and even death threats by the homosexual radicals pushing this into our faces." She warned that the bill passed in the legislature and signed into law by Gov. Christine Gregoire would strip away the protections of the Defense of Marriage Act.

"Do you realize what is going on here?" she wrote. "Consider the following: In 1970 (on the heels of a "free love" '60s radical culture), sodomy laws were repealed in Washington State, with government turning a blind eye to a behavior commonly considered perversion -- and still the case with a majority of Americans."

When asked for comment, Pat Albright, a spokesperson for the Washington Senate Republicans Caucus, said that Stevens "had nothing to add" to her letter. "Basically, that's how she feels."

Stevens also warned supporters that "the homosexuals have amassed over $1 million to sell this reinvention of marriage to an unwitting population," which Steven compared to "the paltry $60,000 we have raised."...(Remainder.)

I’m Going to Push My Depraved Lifestyle on Sen. Stevens’ Children and Family

By J.R. Braden

I just called the office of  Republican State Senator Val Stevens of  the 39th district of Washington state and spoke to a very rude woman.

The number for that office is (360) 435-3367, as listed on her official Facebook fan site.

I was going to write an article on Sen. Stevens’ recent comments on gay marriage, and I wanted to ask a few simple questions about the Senator and her experience working for the State of Washington.  I can’t find any information online more detailed than when she was elected, and it was pertinent to the article I wished to write, so I figured her office would be glad to answer two or three quick questions and avoid a case of misinformation on the Internet.

I was very polite and mentioned who I was and my reason for asking, and the woman, after telling me how much she did not appreciate the call, wouldn’t answer a single question and told me that I would have to ask the Senator herself.  She told me to try later at the Olympia office, but wouldn’t give me that phone number.

Since there is little information about the Senator online and her staff was apparently told not to answer any questions, I really can’t offer any background or commentary on the Senator herself and the best I can do is let her comments stand on their own lack of merit....(Remainder.)

In "Heavily Edited" Video Rebuttal, O'Keefe Does Not Dispute Philly Police Report Filed After His Visit to ACORN Office

By Media Matters

In a heavily edited video released on October 21, conservative filmmaker James O'Keefe purported to rebut statements made by Philadelphia ACORN worker Katherine Conway Russell about O'Keefe's and Hannah Giles' visit to the Philadelphia ACORN office, but O'Keefe did not dispute the authenticity of the police report ACORN filed with Philadelphia police following their visit. The filing of the police report by ACORN -- Russell can be seen holding a copy of it in O'Keefe's video -- indicates the Philadelphia ACORN office had no intention of helping O'Keefe and Giles conduct any illegal activities, and ACORN said the police report "proves our clear understanding of this scam that was being portrayed."

"Heavily edited tape" includes no evidence ACORN office provided actual assistance in engaging in illegal activities

O'Keefe releases heavily edited video that omits ACORN worker's statements. In the video released on Andrew Breitbart's on October 21, the audio and video of O'Keefe's and Giles' July 24, 2009, visit to the Philadelphia ACORN office have been heavily edited. Many of Russell's statements in the video of the office visit were edited out and replaced with audio of O'Keefe purporting to explain what she said. As Fox News reported: "The new eight-minute video depicts O'Keefe and Giles entering ACORN's Philadelphia office and meeting with Conway-Russell. O'Keefe and Giles are seen speaking with Conway-Russell, but audio portions of the video are missing or edited in some portions."...(Remainder.)

Do Not Adjust Your TV Sets. That High-Pitched, Relentless Whining Sound Coming from the Screen is Just Fox News

By David Neiwert
Crooks and Liars

It used to be that, when you got a persistent, high-pitched and annoying whine emanating from your TV set -- you know the kind, that high-pitched squeal that feels like a drill in your eardrums -- you'd just go whack the TV set until it stopped, or call your repairman.

Now, it just means you have to turn the channel off Fox News.

All this week, nearly every single Fox News program has tackled the insidious "war on Fox" being waged by the Obama White House. It's been constant and petulant -- and bereft of any awareness whatsoever that they're actually constantly proving the White House's point about a bias in not just the opinion shows but also their "news" product.

It has, however, produced surreal moments like the one above, on Sean Hannity's program last night, with a panel featuring (among others) Steven Crowder of Pajamas Media TV, when the host burst forth with one of his "factual" declarations that actually was a falsehood, followed by a surreally un-self-aware discussion about how the White House doesn't want to be fact-checked:
Hannity: Let me see if I can sum this up. Is it that they want to distract from the debates that they're losing -- the American public overwhelmingly, according to every credible poll, is against Obamacare -- are they trying to distract? Are they trying to intimidate? What's the strategy?

Crowder: I think this is a huge indictment on every other mainstream news source. The fact that the fact-checking is so appalling -- I mean, what does that say about other news networks, that they've given them this free pass, this open lane to this administration?

Charlie Rose: Andrew Ross Sorkin Discusses His Book 'Too Big to Fail'

By Heather
Crooks and Liars

From Charlie Rose on PBS, Andrew Ross Sorkin discusses his new book Too Big to Fail. I highly recommend watching the entire interview if you've got an hour to spare. Wall Street has not learned their lessons even after as Sorkin puts it "they saw the world was about to fall off of its axis".

Watch the full interview here. Transcript here.
ANDREW SORKIN: And part of the thing that’s so interesting about them is they really were thinking ahead. It’s remarkable, at least to me, a board meeting in
Moscow in June -- not in September, in June -- where they are talking...

CHARLIE ROSE: Goldman Sachs.

ANDREW SORKIN: A Goldman Sachs board meeting where they were talking about whether they need to become a bank holding company. Do they need deposits?

At one point they talk about whether they should buy -- are you ready for this -- AIG for the deposits, because they’re thinking if the future keeps going this direction where you need deposits and you need to be the equivalent of a bank holding company, maybe we should buy a company like that. Obviously it doesn’t go anywhere.

CHARLIE ROSE: Is there anything wrong with the fact that when AIG got all that TARP money they had to -- they paid out about $12, $13 billion to Goldman Sachs as a counterpart.

ANDREW SORKIN: I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time asking that question and tracing those two days. And I hope when you read it you really get to feel like you’re there and understand and appreciate what was going on.
And just to give it a little perspective, it really had happened now 24 hours after Lehman and Merrill had gone down, or Merrill had been sold to Bank of America.

The decision to give AIG $85 billion happened in the course of -- the first meeting was 8:00 a.m. Tuesday morning and by noon they decided to do it.

Lou Dobbs Emulates Glenn Beck With Attack on "Czar" Ron Bloom for Quoting Mao-tse Tung

By Heather
Crooks and Liars

Why doesn't Lou Dobbs just move on over to Fox and get it over with? Dobbs does his best to emulate Glenn Beck and attacks another White House "czar" for quoting Mao-tse Tung, taking Anita Dunn's words out of context just as Beck did.
DOBBS: Well, another high-ranking White House appointee extolling the virtues of Chinese leader Mao Tse-tung. When White House manufacturing czar Ron Bloom was an executive at the United Steelworkers Union, he addressed a 2008 forum on the union role in bankruptcy.

RON BLOOM, UNITED STEEL WORKERS: Generally speaking, we get the joke. We know that the free market is nonsense. We know that the whole point is to game the system, to beat the market or at least find someone who will pay you a lot of money because they're convinced that there is a free lunch. We know this is largely about power. That it's an adults' only, no limit game. We kind of agree with Mao that political power comes largely from the barrel of a gun, and we get it that if you want a friend, you should get a dog.

DOBBS: White House Communication Director Anita Dunn last June also cited Mao as one of the great political philosophers in her life. Mao was the leader of communist China from his founding to his death in 1976. His policies and purges believed to have caused the deaths of tens of millions of people, as many as 100 million.

Well to hear more of my thoughts on all the president's czars and their fascination with Mao Tse-Tung, please join me on the radio Monday through Friday for "The Lou Dobbs Show" 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. each afternoon on WOR 710 radio here in New York City.
